Plainedge takes its name from its spot at the edge of the old Hempstead Plains, and was once farmland known for cabbages, cucumbers and potatoes (and, in the early 1800s, for poultry farms that earned it the name "Turkeyville"). Today it is a residential hamlet of about 9,500 people bordered by Bethpage, Farmingdale, North Massapequa and Levittown. It is served mainly by the Plainedge school district.
