New Cassel was founded in the mid-1700s by formerly enslaved African American farmers, making it one of the first free Black communities on Long Island; Hessian settlers who arrived after the Revolution gave it the name of Hesse-Cassel. Bisected by the LIRR Main Line just east of Westbury station and crossed by Prospect Avenue and Brush Hollow Road, it is today a close-knit, largely Latino, Black and Haitian community whose motto is "A Community for All People."
