Barnum Island is a small unincorporated hamlet of about 2,600 people on the eastern part of the island it shares with Island Park, set in the back bays between Oceanside and Long Beach. The island, once known as Hog Island, was renamed for Sarah Ann Baldwin Barnum, who arranged its purchase by the county as a poor farm, and the LIRR Long Beach Branch separates most of the hamlet from the village of Island Park. Its waterfront along Reynolds Channel is home to the Barnum Island wharf and the E.F. Barrett Power Station.
